Blue Moon Legends will be my last attempt to draw my son’s attention to boardgames. He is 7 and he will play games from time to time but without any excitement/interest. This game will be just revised edition of Reiner Knizia’s Blue Moon and including all expansions, published by Fantasy Flight Games (you know: big manuals and great components). It’s 2 players only, with cards and few figures and it’s not cooperative – these are only reasons I will try it with my son. Release date: Q1 2014.

Thursday Night week 2 (Agricola)
Pretty much shocking that I have never played Agricola – currently number 3 on Boardgamegeek ranking. Last night was enough people to split to two groups, so I could quickly check what all the fuss about that game is. We have played 3 players and family version (without hand of cards etc. and simplified rules – as I was told). I was late last night and played only Agricola and one session of Coup. Another good night thanks to Mr. Timewalk (full report to follow on his blog)
The Witcher Adventure Game (teaser)
Fantasy Flight Games as a publisher? Well, this will probably be overpriced with 30+ pages manual but at least we can be sure production will be top-notch. Must buy later this year.
Flash Point Fire Rescue
I had high hopes for Flash Point Fire Rescue, wanted to play this with my kids as it is co-op game, fire-fighters co-op game. Well, it didn’t really work 😉 Older son (7) refuses to play any game if there is no fighting and hates each and every co-op game we have. Younger son (4) really likes to play it but we are limited to simplified family rules. Never played it with adults. There are few expansions available and base game cost around €30. If your kids are into cooperative games than this should work very well.
Thursday Night week 1 (Terra Mystica)
Hosted by Thur Night, plenty of junk food and coffee, every Thursday somewhere near Limerick 😉
Week #1 game of the night was Terra Mystica. It’s heavy euro game with lots of wooden cubes and very nice boards. There are many, many things you can do each turn (8+ actions to choose from) but rules are not that bad (thanks John)…it’s just a lot of things you can do each turn that can complicate things a little bit. There are few things similar to other games (Settlers of Catan, Eclipse etc.) and if you are gamer it should be pretty easy to get in quickly – just don’t show Terra Mystica to casual or non-gamers, they will have no clue what to do 😉 Strong 8 out of 10 after first play! Cost between €45-65.
Mr Jack Pocket (mobile)
Mr Jack Pocket is great 2 player game and this Android version is here just to prove it, I have only one problem with it…price. €3.90??? That’s too much…Game is easy: one player is Jack the Ripper and other controls investigators (Holmes, Watson and dog). You have 8 turns to escape (Jack) or find Jack (investigator) and will use few available actions. Super filler and with mobile version you can play solo.
The Adventurers: The Pyramid of Horus
Do you like Indiana Jones or The Mummy movies? If yes than The Adventurers games are for you! The Pyramid of Horus is quick and very funny game published by FFG which means great production, lots of figures and overcomplicated manuals…well, this time manual is OK. Game is easy: you go into pyramid to get treasures, number of actions you have depends on how many items you carry – heavier your backpack is, less actions (slower) you are. There are sarcophagus to open and mummies to avoid but worst thing are falling blocks that can seal you inside pyramid…you better be quick 😉 Whoever gets out of pyramid and have most treasures wins the game, that’s it. Great game!
Temple Run Danger Chase board game
Temple Run Danger Chase is game you can buy in Smyth’s Toys for around €15 – that would usually means: crap game. Well, it is not that bad, it’s actually funny implementation of very popular iOS/Android endless running game. It can be very fast and some people will hate it after about 2 minutes but I always really enjoy few quick sessions with my 4 year old son 😉
Rune Age
Rune Age is deck-building game and is surprisingly good, there are few scenarios to play and 4 different races to choose, solo play is possible on some scenarios which is why I have borrowed this game. Card graphics are great as you would expect from Fantasy Flight Games productions. This game is not that expensive (around €25) and if you are deck-building fan you should try it out.
